Liverpool continued their positive start to preseason with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Wrexham at Yankee Stadium, as teenage winger Rio Ngumoha once again demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the club’s brightest young talents.
The decisive moment arrived midway through the second half when Ngumoha found space inside the penalty area and fired home a shot that took a slight deflection before beating the goalkeeper. The goal proved enough to separate the sides in a match focused more on preparation than entertainment.
With several senior players unavailable, Liverpool used the opportunity to hand valuable minutes to a number of academy prospects. The youthful lineup showed flashes of quality throughout the evening, with 16-year-old Joshua Abe catching the eye through his pace, movement and willingness to take on defenders.
Wrexham, who are closer to the start of their competitive season, looked well organized and physically sharp. They tested Liverpool on several occasions but were unable to find an equalizer despite enjoying promising spells during the second half.
The match allowed Liverpool’s coaching staff to continue evaluating emerging talent while building match fitness across the squad. A clean sheet and another preseason victory provided further encouragement as preparations continue ahead of the new campaign.
Although the performance was far from polished, Liverpool left New York with another win and further evidence that several of the club’s young players are ready to challenge for greater opportunities in the months ahead.
