Christopher Nolan has once again proven his box office power as The Odyssey delivered the biggest global opening of his career, launching with an impressive $263.7 million worldwide.
The epic adaptation earned $123.5 million in North America and another $140.2 million from 73 international markets, giving the Oscar-winning director one of the strongest debuts of 2026. The film topped the box office in nearly every territory where it opened, establishing itself as the clear global leader.
China told a different story. With The Odyssey not scheduled to open there until August 14, local productions dominated the country’s cinemas during the holiday season. Stephen Chow’s Kung Fu Soccer continued its remarkable run by collecting another $73.7 million in its second weekend, pushing its domestic total past $214 million.
Chinese audiences also embraced animated fantasy comedy All Wishes Come True, which enjoyed a strong opening weekend, while drama A Part of Me also debuted with solid results. Together, those films helped local releases outpace Hollywood titles in the world’s second-largest movie market.
Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5 maintained its momentum, earning another $43.7 million globally to reach $957.3 million worldwide. The animated sequel is now within striking distance of the $1 billion mark and briefly claimed the title of the year’s highest-grossing film in North America. Internationally, Mexico remains its strongest market outside the United States and Canada, while the film also led imported releases in Japan.
Disney’s live-action Moana continued to attract audiences with a second weekend that lifted its worldwide total to $177.4 million. The remake posted particularly strong results across several European markets and Australia.
Universal’s Minions & Monsters rounded out the global top five with another solid weekend, bringing its worldwide total to $358.4 million. The animated adventure also expanded into South Korea, where audience reactions have been especially positive despite strong local competition.
One of those local competitors was South Korean filmmaker Na Hong-jin’s sci-fi thriller Hope, which opened with $16.4 million, including previews, to lead the Korean box office. The film, starring Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender, is set to receive a North American release later this year.
Elsewhere, horror sequel Evil Dead Burn, psychological thriller Obsession, and Olivia Wilde’s The Invite continued adding to their worldwide totals, helping round out another competitive weekend at the global box office.
