Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark made headlines on Wednesday night by breaking the WNBA record for assists in a single game, notching an impressive 19 assists during the Fever’s 101-93 loss to the Dallas Wings.
“I just try to set my teammates up for success,” Clark said after the game. “I think at times I can almost overpass.”
The previous record for assists in a game was held by Courtney Vandersloot, who recorded 18 assists for Chicago on August 31, 2020. Vandersloot also matched that number in a playoff game on September 28, 2021. The record for assists by a rookie was 16, set by Ticha Penicheiro for Sacramento on July 29, 1998.
Clark’s record-breaking assist came with 2:22 remaining in the game, setting up Kelsey Mitchell for a three-pointer that tied the game at 93. Despite her historic performance, Dallas closed the game with an 8-0 run, capitalizing on a turnover by Clark with just 36 seconds left.
Entering the game as the WNBA’s leader in assists per game, Clark also contributed 24 points on 10-for-19 shooting. Her remarkable vision and playmaking ability have already made her a standout in her rookie season.
