Pop superstar Britney Spears was arrested Wednesday night in Southern California on suspicion of driving under the influence, marking another legal development in the life of one of music’s most closely watched figures.
Authorities say officers responded to reports of a speeding vehicle being driven erratically along U.S. 101 near Newbury Park in Ventura County. The driver, identified as Spears, exited the freeway and pulled over without incident.
According to law enforcement, Spears showed visible signs of impairment and completed a series of field sobriety tests before being taken into custody. She was transported to a Ventura County detention facility, booked in the early morning hours, and released several hours later.
Investigators are awaiting chemical test results as the case remains under review. Prosecutors will determine whether formal charges are warranted. Spears is scheduled to appear in court on May 4.
A representative for the singer described the incident as deeply regrettable, stating that she plans to comply with legal obligations and take steps toward personal improvement.
The arrest took place near Thousand Oaks, not far from the area where Spears maintains a residence.
