Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are putting their Hollywood influence behind a new generation of filmmakers as their production company, Artists Equity, expands into independent cinema. The longtime friends and Oscar-winning collaborators have introduced Artists Equity Independent Pictures, a new division designed to develop and support independent films while providing opportunities for emerging directors and storytellers.
The expansion represents another significant step for Artists Equity, which Affleck and Damon established in 2022 with the goal of creating a more collaborative and financially rewarding environment for entertainment professionals.
The new label will operate with support from an independent theatrical film fund, giving the company a dedicated platform for projects aimed at the theatrical marketplace. Jennifer Westin, senior vice president of creative affairs and production, will manage the division’s daily activities and oversee its developing slate. She will work under the leadership of Amy Baer, who serves as Artists Equity’s president of film and television.
The company has already identified several projects that illustrate its ambitions. Among them is A Woman in the Sun, which will mark the feature directorial debut of Julia Cox, whose writing credits include the acclaimed sports drama Nyad. The upcoming film features an impressive cast led by Academy Award winners RenĂ©e Zellweger and Sissy Spacek, alongside Mia Threapleton. Another project, Downriver, brings together director Sam Jones and writer Carl Hiaasen. The film is being developed with producers Joseph Restaino of Hungry Bull Productions and Michael London of Groundswell Productions. Both projects reflect the new division’s emphasis on original storytelling and opportunities for creative talent.
For Affleck and Damon, the initiative also connects to their own experiences building careers through films that helped establish their reputations as serious actors and storytellers. Their professional partnership stretches back decades, most famously to Good Will Hunting, the 1997 drama that earned them an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Artists Equity has since developed a growing portfolio of theatrical and streaming productions, including Air, The Accountant 2, The Instigators and The Rip.
The company’s business model places particular emphasis on expanding financial participation for the people responsible for bringing productions to life. Rather than relying exclusively on traditional compensation structures, Artists Equity has pursued arrangements that allow creative contributors to benefit from a project’s performance.
The introduction of Artists Equity Independent Pictures broadens that mission by creating a dedicated home for smaller films and filmmakers looking to establish themselves in a competitive entertainment industry.
At a time when major studios continue to rely heavily on established franchises and recognizable intellectual property, the new venture signals a commitment to developing stories and creative voices outside Hollywood’s biggest commercial properties.
With experienced leadership, financial support and several projects already taking shape, Affleck and Damon are positioning their latest venture as an opportunity to help independent filmmakers reach wider audiences.
The two stars have spent much of their careers working together in front of and behind the camera. Now, their expanding production company could help provide a similar starting point for the next generation of Hollywood talent.
