Amidst peeling wallpaper, fluorescent blue tub rings, and floor tiles long past salvation, you may be looking to renovate your bathroom.
But as Architectural Digest reports, not all modern bathroom ideas are created equal—just google “modern bathroom ideas” and you’ll find some 645 million results. Indeed, when it comes to updating your primary bath or any other bathroom in your house, a wise update pays from both a resale perspective (if you look to sell your home one day) and relaxation perspective (your bathroom is supposed to be a serene environment for unwinding, after all).
Spa Bathrooms
Enhanced bathrooms to mimic and pull in the amenities of a spa are going to be on the rise making a big splash in 2024. With the known health benefits of ice baths/cold plunge pools and heat therapy via hot saunas and steam rooms, customers are going to flock to incorporate this for the health and relaxation benefits. We will see this incorporated into new construction as well as bathroom renovations.
Wet Room
Ah, how modern bathroom designs teleport you to a saner state of mind when you create a shower and tub alcove of sorts. “If you’re incorporating a shower and bathtub and space is a concern, consider a wet room—where a freestanding tub and shower are paired together in a single space,” says Gina Caulkins, founder and principal designer at California Daydreams located in Marin County, California. Caulkins calls this concept a “fresh, lux take on a shower-tub combo” that establishes a spa-like ambience. “Even better if you can create a curb-less entry to the wet room, for seamless visual flow,” the designer says.
Spa-Like Lighting
Even if you don’t have the time or budget to do a total bathroom overhaul, updated lighting punches above its weight when it comes to modern bathroom designs without investing a lot of money or manpower. “ Peak Petersen of Hoedemaker Pfeiffer expects to see a shift in bathroom lighting. “A step past a simple sconce pair flanking the mirror, 2024 will explore the options of backlit mirrors and wall washing with integrated ceiling lighting, which adds a minimalist edge to the bathroom.”
Mix and Match
“In a modern bathroom, don’t be afraid to combine sleek materials with earthy textures and natural products to create a beautiful spa aesthetic,” says Melissa Fenigstein, an interior designer at New Age Interiors in Syosset, New York. Perhaps used textured porcelain wall tiles to add depth and enhance durability. Try mixing some natural stone and quartz, and natural wood gives the space an earthy, organic feel.
