On Wednesday, December, 14th, Gunna plead guilty to his involvement in the criminal case against Young Thug and other alleged members of an Atlanta gang, which secured his release from jail, although he assured he was not cooperating with prosecutors.
A statement that was released by his lawyers, Gunna said he had taken an Alford plea, a maneuver that lets a defendant enter a formal admission of guilt while still maintaining their innocence. The rapper had to plead guilty to a single charge against him and then was sentenced Wednesday to a time served, suspended sentence. That is when his lawyer confirmed that Gunna would be “released from jail in the next few hours.”
Gunna also wrote that, “While I have agreed to always be truthful, I want to make it perfectly clear that I have NOT made any statements, have NOT been interviewed, have NOT cooperated, have NOT agreed to testify or be a witness for or against any party in the case and have absolutely NO intention of being involved in the trial process in any way.”
Back in May, Gunna and Young Thug were both indicted along with dozens of others, on accusations that their group YSL, was really a violent Atlanta street gang called Young Slime Life. The charges being brought forward include allegations of murder, carjacking, armed robbery, drug dealing and illegal firearm possession over the course of the past decade.
In Wednesday’s statement, Gunna stated that he was “acknowledging my association with YSL,” but that he had never seen the group as a criminal enterprise at all.
