Ye returned to Chicago for a hometown tribute that put the spotlight on the woman whose influence reached far beyond her famous son.
The artist formerly known as Kanye West attended an honorary street-naming ceremony Tuesday, September 22, celebrating his late mother, educator and scholar Dr. Donda West.
The ceremony was held at 78th Street and South Shore Drive in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood, where a portion of 78th Street now carries the honorary name Dr. Donda West Way.
Ye joined Chicago 7th Ward Alderman Greg Mitchell for the unveiling of the new street sign. Although the rapper did not address the media, his attendance added a deeply personal element to a ceremony focused on his mother’s contributions to education, literature and Chicago culture.
Donda West built an accomplished career in academia long before her son became one of the most recognizable figures in hip-hop. She spent more than two decades at Chicago State University, where she served as chair of the English Department and established the Gwendolyn Brooks Center for Black Literature and Creative Writing.
Her influence also extended into Chicago’s creative community.
Several figures with longstanding connections to Ye and the city’s hip-hop scene attended the ceremony, including Rhymefest, GLC, Don C and Really Doe. Their presence reflected the wider role Donda West played as a mentor and supporter of young artists who spent time around her family.
The location of the dedication carries its own significance. The honorary street designation is near the South Shore home connected to Ye’s upbringing and early years making music, placing his mother’s name permanently within a neighborhood closely tied to the family’s history.
Donda West died in 2007 at age 58, but her influence has continued to appear throughout her son’s career. Ye named his 2021 album “Donda” in her honor, further establishing her legacy as a recurring part of his music and public story.
With Dr. Donda West Way, Chicago has now given that legacy a permanent place in the neighborhood where much of the story began.
