Would You Try Breast Milk Ice Cream?

So, what’s in your cone this summer? A new ice cream flavor inspired by breast milk is drumming up chatter across the country. As ABC News reports, just in time for National Breastfeeding Month, OddFellows Ice Cream Co. and Frida, a baby product company, have teamed up to make breast milk-inspired ice cream in celebration of Frida’s new 2-in-1 Manual Breast Pump.

It’s described as “sweet, a little salty, smooth, with hints of honey and sprinkles of colostrum, and features a distinct colostrum yellow tinge.” But this “Breast Milk Ice Cream” that’s making a splash nationally is reportedly “inspired by,” but does not contain any actual human breast milk. Back in 2011, NPR reported that an ice cream shop in London sold a product that actually was made from breast milk, but according to the BBC, that was rapidly shut down due to “safety concerns.”

Frida’s Breast Milk Ice Cream is made with the standard ice cream ingredients — milk, heavy cream, skim milk powder, egg yolks and sugar. However, it also has honey, fruit juice and one standout ingredient: liposomal bovine colostrum. Although the version in Frida’s ice cream is from cows, colostrum is also present in human breast milk, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is high in nutrients and antibodies.

According to Healthline, real breast milk does provide the best in nutrition for babies, strengthens their immune system and reduces risk of illnesses. Moms benefit, too. Breastfeeding bolsters recovery after giving birth, may aid weight loss and has been linked to less risk of certain cancers.

Now that’s something no ice cream has been able to claim.

According to Frida, the Breast Milk Ice Cream has a “lightly sweet, a little salty with hints of honey,” and is available only for a limited time at OddFellows’ New York ice cream shop in Dumbo, but if you can’t get there, pints are also available for shipping nationwide on Frida’s website.
