Willie Nelson Reflects on Losing Kris Kristofferson and Releases His 76th Album, The Last Leaf on the Tree

As Willie Nelson releases his 76th album, The Last Leaf on the Tree, the legendary musician took a heartfelt moment to honor his longtime friend and collaborator, Kris Kristofferson, who passed away in September at 88. In a recent interview with the Associated Press, Nelson, now 91, remembered Kristofferson’s influence and the deep friendship they shared.

Remembering Kristofferson: “He was a great songwriter,” Nelson said, reflecting on the musical legacy Kristofferson left behind. He highlighted the joy of their decades-long collaboration and friendship, which included countless songs, videos, and movies. Their partnership spanned genres and generations, from country hits to Hollywood projects. “I hated to lose him,” Nelson admitted, calling it a “sad time” for the music world.

The Highwaymen Legacy: Nelson and Kristofferson were part of the iconic outlaw country supergroup, the Highwaymen, alongside Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings. With Kristofferson’s passing, Nelson is now the last surviving member of the influential quartet. “I am the only one left,” he reflected, noting how surreal it feels to be the last man standing from such a groundbreaking era in country music.

Embracing Mortality: As he reminisced on friends he’s lost, Nelson also spoke candidly about his own outlook on life and mortality. Remarkably active for his age, he shared that he feels no fear of death. “I don’t feel bad. I don’t hurt anywhere,” he said, adding that he takes care of his health and remains in good shape. But, ever the humorist, Nelson added with a smile, “Mentally? That’s another story.”

New Album The Last Leaf on the Tree: Nelson’s new album features covers of classic tracks, including Beck’s “Lost Cause,” a hauntingly reflective piece that Rolling Stone compared to Johnny Cash’s unforgettable rendition of “Hurt.” The Last Leaf on the Tree is a fitting title for Nelson, who continues to honor the music and memories of his friends and collaborators through his work.

A Busy Year in Music and Advocacy: Despite his age, Nelson shows no signs of slowing down. His 75th album, The Border, came out in May, and he has remained active in social causes. Just last week, he joined Kamala Harris and Beyoncé in Houston at a rally. Beyoncé even shared her admiration in a note, thanking Nelson for his advocacy and his ability to celebrate and uplift other artists.

For Nelson, each song and each performance are tributes to the journey he’s shared with his friends and to the music that defines his life. With The Last Leaf on the Tree, he continues to prove that his voice and spirit are as resilient as ever.
