Will Ferrell Reflects on Transphobia and Friendship in New Netflix Documentary

Will Ferrell recently shared his thoughts on transphobia during a press interview with The Independent while promoting his upcoming Netflix documentary, Will & Harper. When asked why transphobia exists, Ferrell responded, “I think we fear what we don’t know.”

Will & Harper explores the long-standing friendship between Ferrell and Harper Steele, who came out as transgender 30 years into their relationship. The documentary, acquired by Netflix after its Sundance debut, follows the duo on a cross-country road trip as they reconnect and adjust to the changes in their lives post-transition.

Ferrell addressed the hatred and danger the trans community faces: “There is hatred out there. It’s very real and it’s very unsafe for trans people in certain situations… But I don’t understand why Harper, or any trans person, would be threatening to me.”

He added, “Harper is finally her true self. Why would someone’s happiness threaten you? I think it comes from a lack of confidence in oneself.”

Ferrell noted that Steele’s coming out was new territory for him, admitting he had little knowledge of the trans community before she came out.

Will & Harper premieres on Netflix on Sept. 27, offering a thoughtful look at friendship, identity, and acceptance.
