Will Ferrell on Leaving Drag Comedy Behind and New Documentary with Harper Steele

Will Ferrell, known for his bold comedic roles, has left his days of drag comedy in the past. In a recent interview, Ferrell, 57, reflected on his portrayal of former U.S. Attorney Janet Reno during his Saturday Night Live days, stating that he wouldn’t take on similar roles today. “That’s something I wouldn’t choose to do now,” Ferrell explained.

During SNL Seasons 22 and 23, Ferrell dressed in drag for several sketches as Reno, eliciting laughs at the time. However, his long-time friend and former SNL head writer, Harper Steele, noted how society’s views have evolved. Steele, a trans woman, commented, “The laugh is often just ‘a guy in a dress,’ and that’s not funny.”

Steele’s coming out in 2022 inspired a cross-country road trip with Ferrell, which became the basis for their new Netflix documentary, Will & Harper, premiering September 27. The film explores their friendship and America’s views on the trans community, with Ferrell describing it as a learning experience. “This was all new territory for me,” he said.

Steele hopes the documentary helps society better understand the trans experience, while also encouraging compassion. Will & Harper debuts Friday, September 27, on Netflix.
