Whoopi Goldberg Stranded in Sicily After Mount Etna Disrupts Travel

Whoopi Goldberg’s return to The View after the Fourth of July break was unexpectedly delayed by the forces of nature.

The longtime moderator found herself stranded in Sicily after volcanic activity from Mount Etna disrupted air travel, preventing her from making it back to the United States in time for the live broadcast.

Rather than leaving viewers wondering about her absence, Goldberg recorded a video message from Italy, explaining that airport closures had halted her travel plans. She assured fans she was doing everything possible to get home and looked forward to returning to the show as soon as flights resumed.

Even while dealing with the unexpected travel setback, Goldberg maintained her trademark sense of humor, joking that a volcano had become the perfect excuse for missing work.

Back in New York, Joy Behar stepped in to help anchor the program while actress and comedian Michelle Buteau expanded her scheduled appearance by joining the panel as a guest co-host. Additional travel and weather issues affecting other hosts created one of the more unusual editions of the daytime talk show in recent memory.

Although the volcanic eruption temporarily altered the show’s lineup, Goldberg’s upbeat message and lighthearted attitude turned an unexpected travel nightmare into an entertaining story for viewers.
