Weezer invited fan Kira Iaconetti to join them at one of their upcoming 2019 shows after a video of her singing “Island in the Sun” while undergoing brain surgery went viral.
“It just felt like a light switch switches in my brain and suddenly I’m tone deaf. I can’t sing. I can’t process the words in time with the music,” Kira said in a statement about her brain tumor that brought on music-triggered epileptic attacks.
The 19-year-old aspiring musician and performer sang throughout her procedure so that doctors could identify parts of her brain to avoid while removing the tumor. In a craniotomy, Iaconetti was put under anesthesia but kept awake, where she did a rendition of Weezer’s 2001 track “Island in the Sun” because it reminded her of her native Hawaii and she resonated with the lyric “I can’t control my brain.”
After the video of Iaconetti singing hit the internet, Weezer took to Twitter to invite her to one of their shows next year. “Wishing you a speedy recovery, @kirakuuihe! Would love for you to join us at one of the shows this spring – shoot us a DM + we’ll make it happen,” wrote the band in a tweet.
