On Thursday, January 28th, Miley Cyrus crammed into a tiny bedroom for her emotional three-song NPR Tiny Desk (Home) Concert. The performance included two originals and a moving cover of Mazzy Star’s “Fade Into You”.
The singer, used to putting on a big spectacle, got small for the three-song set, in which she squeezed into a set made to look like a teenager’s pink bedroom, complete with scrawled drawings on the wall and miniature furniture.
Dressed in a fuzzy cowboy hat, shades, long black animal-print coat with clashing animal-print pants and vest, Miley looked like a giant in the pocket space, opening with another of her signature Miley-fied covers of the 1994 Mazzy Star ballad “Fade Into You.” Leaning back as she sang, Miley crooned “I look to you to see the truth/ You live your life, you go in shadows/ You’ll come apart and you’ll go black.”
Miley ditched the hat, jacket and glasses, but stayed seated on the bed for the clear-eyed “Golden G-String” from her recent album Plastic Hearts. “That’s just the world we’re livin’ in,” Miley wailed. The finale of the concert showed Miley crawling from the mini-set and her masked, distanced band came into view around her, she stayed in a crouch for the simmering 1980s-style Hearts ballad “Prisoner.
