The Washington Commanders released the quarterback, Carson Wentz on Monday, only one season after getting him on the team via a trade with the Indianapolis Colts last offseason. Washington gave up multiple Day 2 draft picks attempting to solve its quarterback issue, but failed to solve it using Wentz.
The Commanders also gained salary cap space of $26.17 million in completing the move. Wentz wanted a salary of $20 million for next season and a cap charge of around $26.1 million, making it nearly impossible for him to remain in Washington.
Wentz had a 2-4 start in the first six games of the season for the Commanders in 2022. With Wentz completing 62% of his throws with an 84.1 passer rating while getting 10 touchdowns and six interceptions total.
Wentz then suffered from a fracture to his ring finger on his throwing hand during a week six game against the Chicago Bears, that left him on the injury reserve. Allowing for Taylor Heinicke to start off the majority of the season with Wentz only grabbing one more start during a week 17 loss to the Browns when he threw three interceptions.
