It appears that most, if not all, the top designers have decided to go to the ends of the earth to stage (or upstage each other) for their 2021 Resort Collections. So if you are of a mind to attend any of these, you’d best get your passport ready and get ready to go around the world!
First, let’s start close to home, because Donatella Versace is heading back to the States for her resort show. After showing its pre-fall 2019 collection in New York in December 2018 — the brand’s first runway event in the United States — Versace will unveil its resort 2021 lineup in a still undisclosed location in the country. The runway show, which will include both women’s and men’s looks — Versace is debuting the co-ed format in Milan in February — will take place on May 16, two days before the Gucci resort show to be staged on May 18 in an undisclosed U.S. location.
But wait, there’s more! WWD reports that Prada is heading to Japan to unveil its resort 2021 collection. The runway show will take place on May 21, but the location of the event is still undisclosed. This will be the first show staged by Prada in Japan. In June the brand hosted its men’s spring 2020 runway show in Shanghai.
Prada started presenting its resort collections with a show in 2017, when the luxury brand staged a runway event at the Fondazione Prada Osservatorio inside Milan’s Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II arcade. In 2018 and 2019, Prada headed to New York to show its resort 2019 and 2020 collections with shows at its headquarters in Midtown Manhattan. The Prada resort 2021 show will follow the Chanel one to be hosted in Capri on May 7 and will happen just a few days before Max Mara’s cruise runway event in St. Petersburg on May 25.
After editors and buyers fly to Japan to attend the Prada show on May 21, they will have to be back in Europe on May 27 to discover the Dior lineup. Actually, the resort fashion tour will kick off in April with the Giorgio Armani runway show in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, followed on May 7 by the Chanel event on the Capri island.
That’s right, Giorgio Armani will stage its cruise 2021 fashion show in Dubai this year! The date of the event has not been disclosed, but it will take place in April to coincide with the reopening of the brand’s store at the Dubai Mall. As reported by WWD, Giorgio Armani presented its cruise 2020 collection in Tokyo, reiterating the bond the designer has with Japan and its culture. Choosing Dubai for the upcoming show is in sync with the same spirit, as Armani inaugurated his first hotel there in 2010. In addition, the event will further contribute to the media exposure the city will have next year, when it will host Expo 2020.
“I’m very happy to be back in Dubai after 10 years, especially on the occasion of the Expo 2020 which will place a great emphasis on the city,” the designer said. “Dubai is a luxurious and fascinating place with a soul focused on the future, always in pursuit of the imagination,” he added.
