U2 will add another major distinction to its decades-long career when the legendary Irish rock group is honored as MusiCares’ 2027 Persons of the Year.
Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. will be recognized during the annual MusiCares benefit gala on February 5, 2027, just two nights before the Grammy Awards.
The honor celebrates more than U2’s success on records and concert stages. It also recognizes the band’s long history of using its global platform to support humanitarian causes and bring attention to major social issues.
For U2, the recognition also offers an opportunity to shine a light on the enormous network of people who have helped keep the band moving throughout a career spanning roughly five decades. The group acknowledged the producers, engineers, touring personnel and other professionals whose work behind the scenes has played an essential role in its longevity.
That connection makes the MusiCares recognition particularly fitting. The organization serves music professionals facing financial, medical and personal difficulties, providing assistance in areas including mental health, addiction recovery, health care, basic living expenses and disaster relief.
U2 has built a reputation for combining arena-sized rock music with an equally ambitious approach to activism. MusiCares cited that combination of music, advocacy and community impact as a major reason for selecting the band for its 2027 honor.
The February gala is also expected to turn U2’s catalog over to a lineup of fellow artists for a night of musical tributes. The performers have not yet been announced, leaving one of the evening’s biggest questions unanswered: who gets the job of playing U2 songs for U2?
The recognition comes as the band remains creatively active rather than simply looking back at its considerable history. U2 has released two EPs during 2026, recorded a cover of The Pogues and introduced a song associated with its still-untitled forthcoming studio album.
After decades of albums, tours and advocacy, U2’s MusiCares honor will celebrate four musicians whose influence has extended well beyond the stage. This time, Bono and company will get to sit in the audience while the music industry turns the spotlight back on them.
