Toni Braxton, the celebrated singer, recently shared her harrowing journey with lupus during an episode of the SHE MD Podcast. Diagnosed in 2008 after multiple health scares, Braxton’s path to understanding her condition was fraught with uncertainty and misdiagnoses, leading her to consult numerous specialists before finally receiving accurate answers about her health.
During her podcast appearance alongside Mary Alice Haney and her doctors, Dr. Thais Alibadi and Dr. Daniel Jeffrey Wallace, Braxton detailed her struggles and the pivotal moments of her diagnosis. Notably, she collapsed twice during performances, once in New York and another time in Las Vegas, both incidents signaling severe underlying health issues. These events eventually led her to Dr. Wallace, who diagnosed her with lupus after she was airlifted to Los Angeles following her second collapse.
Braxton recounted the challenges of living with lupus, an autoimmune disease that often mimics other conditions, making it hard to diagnose. She also discussed her decision to remove her breast implants and the revelation of her heart condition, which includes microvascular angina and a history of pericarditis.
Despite the initial fears about how her diagnosis would affect her career, Toni is now preparing for a Las Vegas residency with Cedric the Entertainer. She expressed enthusiasm about the project, noting that Cedric was supportive of her needs related to managing lupus. Braxton’s story is not only a testament to her resilience but also highlights the complexities of navigating a serious health diagnosis while in the public eye.
