Tom Petty died a while ago at the age of 66, but how much did we really know about this iconic rocker? Yes, Tom battled drug and alcohol addiction for years, and sure, we watched his induction into the Rock and Roll and Songwriters Hall of Fame’s, but here’s more Tom Petty information…
When Tom had the chance, he enjoyed acting; he played Luanne Platter’s husband on ‘King Of The Hill,’ appeared in the films, FM and Made in Heaven, and had a pretty good role in friend Kevin Costner’s film The Postman. On television, he’s a member of the ‘5 Time’ club for Saturday Night Live.
When it came to music he was nearly perfect, with one exception; Tom was offered the tune “The Boys Of Summer,” but turned it down for some reason. We know it became a signature song for Don Henley.
Tom has had legal issues early in his career, once telling his label to drop the price of his album or else. The record label relented. Most recently, contemporary Sam Smith was sued for his tune “Stay With Me” because of the familiarity with Tom’s “I Won’t Back Down”. Sam lost and agreed to pay Tom a percentage of the royalties of the tune.
