Tom Morello Reflects on Rage Against the Machine’s Fiery Legacy and His Role as Torchbearer

Tom Morello recently offered a candid look back at Rage Against the Machine’s final performances, acknowledging the band’s long-standing intensity—and what comes next. “Rage Against the Machine was always sort of a volatile situation,” he told Ultimate Guitar, underscoring how their passionate internal dynamics powered their music and performances. Despite the turbulence, Morello highlighted the band achieved something rare: four groundbreaking albums, powerful shows—even while frontman Zack de la Rocha occasionally sat out due to injury—and multiple sold‑out nights in their final run.

Now, while the band isn’t touring anymore, Morello says he’s “carrying the torch”—committing to take the spirit of Rage’s riffs and anti-establishment messages forward in his solo work.

His solo career continues to brim with activism—in both lyrics and action—as Morello channels the band’s unyielding energy into all his performances. Whether fans ever see Rage again or not, the heart of their rebellion lives on through his guitar.
