Timothée Chalamet Lookalike Contest in NYC Gets Shut Down by Police

A Timothée Chalamet lookalike contest held in New York City’s Washington Square Park on Sunday, October 27, drew hundreds of fans dressed as the actor’s famous characters, from Willy Wonka to his upcoming portrayal of Bob Dylan. However, the fan-organized gathering quickly encountered complications as the NYPD stepped in to disperse the crowd for not having a permit.

Chalamet’s Surprise Appearance and Police Intervention
The crowd’s excitement peaked when Chalamet himself made a surprise appearance, waving to fans and taking photos. Videos shared on social media captured the Oscar nominee weaving through the crowd as fans cheered. Yet the event took a turn when NYPD officers arrived, citing concerns over crowd size and safety, with officers urging attendees to disperse.

According to NBC New York, at least one person was detained, and the event’s organizer was reportedly issued a summons. Officers broadcasted a warning over a megaphone, announcing, “You’re all gonna get summonses,” to encourage the crowd to leave the area.

Fans Crown a Winner Despite Police Presence
Despite police intervention, the competition proceeded informally, with attendees parading their Chalamet-inspired costumes. Ultimately, a fan in a purple Willy Wonka costume was crowned the winner, though it’s unclear if they received the promised $50 prize.

NYC’s Recent Trend of Shut-Down Fan Gatherings
The Chalamet lookalike event is the latest in a series of fan-centered gatherings in New York City that have been disrupted by police. In August 2023, Twitch streamer Kai Cenat organized a massive giveaway in Union Square Park, which ended in multiple arrests and injuries among officers. Although Cenat initially faced charges of inciting a riot, they were ultimately dropped.
