Tim Patrick’s Comeback Hits a Roadblock as Broncos Consider Their Options

Tim Patrick’s determined comeback effort has taken an unexpected turn. According to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero, the Denver Broncos are moving on from the veteran wide receiver, though he has not yet been officially released. With the NFL’s cutdown deadline looming on Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET, there’s still a chance Denver could trade Patrick before making a final decision.

Patrick’s NFL career has largely unfolded in Denver, where he joined the Broncos’ practice squad in 2017 after brief stints with the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers. The undrafted Utah product rose from obscurity to become a key depth player and eventually a reliable No. 3 receiver, posting back-to-back 700-plus-yard seasons in 2020 and 2021.

In recognition of his contributions, Denver rewarded Patrick with a three-year, $30 million contract extension in 2021. However, injuries sidelined him for the next two seasons, delaying his return to form. Finally healthy in 2024, Patrick seemed poised for a strong comeback, expressing his optimism after recording his first reception in over two years and promising fans that the best was yet to come.

Unfortunately, Patrick’s resurgence will have to take place elsewhere. Denver’s decision to part ways with him is driven by a crowded receiver room, bolstered by the addition of Oregon’s Troy Franklin in the fourth round of the draft, the offseason signing of Josh Reynolds, and the presence of younger talents like Marvin Mims Jr., Lil’Jordan Humphrey, preseason standout Brandon Johnson, and established No. 1 receiver Courtland Sutton.

Despite this setback, Patrick is likely to attract interest from other teams. Having proven his health and ability to contribute, he could be a valuable addition for teams in need of a seasoned receiver, such as the Detroit Lions or Pittsburgh Steelers. The coming hours will reveal whether Denver can finalize a trade before the cutdown deadline or if Patrick will be released to explore new opportunities.
