In a recent interview with Australian broadcaster Double J, Radiohead’s frontman Thom Yorke gave a candid response to ongoing fan speculation about a possible reunion for the iconic band. Yorke was clear about his stance, saying, “I am not aware of it and don’t really give a flying f—,” while expressing gratitude to fans for their enduring interest. He added, “But I think we’ve earned the right to do what makes sense to us without having to explain ourselves.”
Yorke reflected on the band’s achievements as a launching point for the creative freedom he’s enjoyed since Radiohead went on hiatus in 2018. “I don’t think we feel the need to live up to anything,” he said, dismissing the pressure to meet fan expectations as a “non-problem.”
Bandmate Jonny Greenwood Open to Possibilities
Yorke’s Radiohead bandmate Jonny Greenwood, while less blunt, hinted at the band’s collective focus on side projects. In a May interview with The Guardian, he noted that Yorke and he are currently performing with The Smile, Ed O’Brien is working on a solo album, and Colin Greenwood recently performed with Nick Cave. “Just not as Radiohead,” Greenwood clarified, adding, “We’re still talking all the time, we just need to make a plan and get some time together.”
Context: Radiohead’s Hiatus and Creative Evolution
Radiohead’s last album, A Moon Shaped Pool, released in 2016, marked a shift for the band. With each member now pursuing individual projects, their hiatus has given rise to acclaimed side ventures while leaving open questions about when or if the band might collaborate again.
Though Yorke appears content with his solo direction and partnership in The Smile, Greenwood’s comments offer a glimmer of hope for fans who’ve long awaited the band’s return.
