The future is now, and it seems classic 1960’s Star Trek has influenced present day reality. Okay, it’s not exactly teleportation, but it’s a start: scientists have created a futuristic elevator for the home that resembles the Turbolifts on Star Trek‘s USS Enterprise.
Created by Terry Lifts, a company based out of Knutsford, Cheshire, UK, their domestic elevators are meant to aid members of the disabled community, the elderly and other individuals who might have a difficult time climbing a functional staircase. The Lifestyle Home Elevator is the ultimate way to “future proof” a house in case the homebuilder’s needs ever change, adding value to a property which a stair lift would not do. The Lifestyle Home Lift features an elegant design and a stylish, slim profile. Instead of requiring a shaft, the lift has a self-supporting structure.
The elevator utilizes a complex hydraulic system to transport a maximum of two passengers between floors; this streamlines any major overhauls regarding home construction, doing away with the use of an elevator shaft or floor pit. A wall console controls the operation.
This means that the residential elevator takes up a minimal amount of space and can be installed quickly and easily. It is fixed to the floor base, to the aperture ring and the ceiling on the first floor. This is not only aesthetically pleasing, it also alleviates the need to fix to a party wall which may back onto a next door neighbor. The Lifestyle cabin is fitted with a clear glass panel door and there is an option to include a fold down seat and a wireless handheld remote control.
