These Materials are all the Rage for Interior Designers Right Now

Mixed Metals

You can’t go wrong with mixing metals in every room of the house, says Joshua Smith of Joshua Smith Interior Design. “Mixed metals will be a hit in bathrooms and beyond in 2024. There are lots of opportunities to use a mixed metal light fixture to harmoniously combine brass and black or bronze, or dare I say brass and nickel! Gasp. Accessible options make it easier to find the perfect balance of finishes you need by mixing and matching certain parts. We’ll also see powder-coated metals in any Pantone color become mainstream.”

Wood is Timeless

Tim Pfeiffer of Hoedemaker Pfeiffer says, “finely crafted sculptural wooden furniture will never go away. Wood brings warmth and familiarity to interior settings as well as outdoors. Sculptural shape and form are more important today than ever.” As the push for personalized and unique furnishings and decor continues to rise, there will be an increase in “handcrafted artisanal furniture from the bespoke woodworker designs,” says Pfeiffer.

Cane Detailing

Along with natural wood making a resurgence in home design, cane detailing will make an appearance as a way to bring this natural color and look into the home. Anything from chair backs to cabinet fronts, cane detailing is coming back, but in the best way.

Granite is Back

“Surprisingly, I’ve seen some incredible granites at the slab yard. While I never thought I would put granite on a project, we’ve been slowly using it more and more as we see slabs that have incredible movement and veining and look almost like quartzite. In fact, the conference table in our design studio is made up of two bookmatched slabs of granite with bold white veins running through it,” says Devon from Devon Grace Interiors.

Performance Fabrics

Brad Ramsey of Brad Ramsey Interiors shares that he predicts performance fabrics will be all the rage in 2024. “Now that we can do anything from exterior to interior fabrics that look like linens, velvets and everything in between, I see performance fabrics always being a staple in design. They’ll never go away!”

Velvet Vibes

Smith says there will be an increase in velvet fabrics as boucle begins to fade away. “Boucle has finally faded away and will continue to diminish in 2024. Meanwhile, showrooms are embracing performance velvets for a chic livable texture.” Pfeiffer agrees, and predicts that “’40s era upholstery shapes are making a comeback, and Mohair and velvets are plentiful with the bolder use of color as accent in upholstery.”

Tapestry Resurgence

We will see a resurgence of tapestries, adorned to a wall space, on the rise in the coming year. With many different styles, colors and sizes, these versatile fabrics can be designed to fit any style or space.

Tiling in Color

“We’re seeing multiple-color installations more than ever before,” says Ashley Biscan, trend expert for Floor & Decor. “Using the same shape and size tile allows homeowners to play with color while keeping the design cohesive.” If a rainbow look like this one isn’t for you, install a few colorful tiles in random spots on an otherwise neutral wall.

Pattern Mixing

Instead of trying to find items that go together, we will see more pattern mixing in 2024. This curated maximalism brings together joyful colors and patterns that you may not think, upon first glance, would go together.
