Recall Alert: Country Vet dog treats are being recalled in seven states by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) due to possible Salmonella contamination.
About the Recall
Consumers Supply Distributing announced the recall right before Christmas. The impacted products are the 4-pound bags of Country Vet Biscuits – Original Meaty Flavor and 4-pound bags of Heartland Harvest Dog Biscuits – Meaty Flavor with Chicken.
The products were sold in stores in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Texas, Montana and Nebraska.
The Risk of Salmonella for both Humans and Pets
Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is a risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after contact with the food or any surfaces exposed to the products.
According to the FDA’s website, healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.
In rare cases, Salmonella can result in more serious illnesses like arterial infections, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms.
Anyone exhibiting the symptoms should contact their health care providers.
Animals that digest Salmonella can become lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Pets can experience decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans.
Owners of animals that have consumed the recalled product are being asked to contact their veterinarian.

The products can be identified with the following information:

- Heartland Harvest Dog Biscuits ‒ UPC: 840227340691; Lot Code: 40906513; Size: 4 lb. bag; Expiration Date: 09/06/2026.
Consumers who have purchased the recalled products should stop using them and return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund.
The good news is that, so far, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall. Salmonella was detected in the products as part of a routine sampling program by the FDA. Tests revealed the products contained the bacteria, and the company then ceased production and distribution of the product. The FDA and the company are still investigating what may have caused the issue.
