Shorts have always been a summer staple, but this warm-weather basic is experiencing newfound prominence in fashion trend cycles. Shorts were everywhere on the Spring 2024 runways, so it should be no surprise that they’re popping up all over the streets this season. Still, it’s been hard to pinpoint the one style that’s leading the way.
As Fashionista reports, micro shorts and hot pants dominated runways like Gucci, Tom Ford, Versace and Miu Miu; the latter also showed longer board shorts, while bermuda shorts were offered up by influential labels like Jil Sander, Dries Van Noten, Simone Rocha, Staud and Chanel. For those averse to extremes, moderate lengths were pervasive as well.
So what shorts should you be wearing now? More than ever, that’s up to you, with an exceptionally wide variety on the market these days; here are the six trends that Fashionista says are really having a moment this year.
Boxer Shorts
A comfy, easy style that can be dressed up or down, boxer-style shorts are pretty ideal for hot temperatures. Consumer behavior confirms they are having a moment: Shopper searches on LTK for boxer shorts are up 233% in the past 60 days. And the number of posts by LTK Creators featuring boxer shorts are up 314% YoY. According to Klarna, boxer shorts purchases increased by 91% between April 2023 and April 2024.
Micro Shorts
Micro shorts were all over 2024 runways, but it wasn’t immediately clear whether many real shoppers would partake. After all, the “micro” means you look like you’re wearing tightie whities – just in other colors and prints. But the brands are betting you will: They’re everywhere, from high-waist to low-waist; denim to sequins.
Bermuda Shorts
At the other end of the length spectrum, knee-length shorts — a.k.a. Bermuda shorts — are continuing to have a resurgence, likely driven by the continued popularity of Y2K aesthetics.
Baggy Denim Shorts
Jorts will never be out of style, but this year, brands are making them longer and looser than ever. Dress yours up with kitten heels for a night out or practical sneakers for a chill daytime look.
Athletic Shorts
This may be the most laid-back 2024 shorts trend — and one that’s been especially popular in street style. Sporty board shorts and basketball shorts are the ultimate in versatility, taking you from an evening on the couch to a night out depending on the styling.
Linen Shorts
The MVP of summer fabrics, linen shorts will become your go-to when temperatures really begin to rise. They’re a classic you don’t have to worry about going out of style, but they are quite popular right now: LTK searches for them are up 110% over the past 60 days.
