The Weeknd brought an unexpected collision of pop music and anime culture to Japan, unveiling an unreleased song built around one of the most recognizable themes in anime history.
Abel Tesfaye debuted the track during the September 19 opening of the Asian leg of his After Hours Til Dawn Stadium Tour at Belluna Dome in Saitama, near Tokyo.
The new material incorporates elements of “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis,” the opening theme from the influential 1995 anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion. Rather than simply borrowing from the song’s legacy, Tesfaye brought its original singer directly into the performance.
Japanese vocalist Yoko Takahashi joined The Weeknd onstage, turning the debut into a crossover between his stadium-sized pop production and a piece of music deeply associated with Japanese anime culture.
The presentation extended well beyond the music. Yoko Taro, the creative force known for his work on the NieR video game series, was involved with visuals that brought together imagery associated with NieR:Automata and Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Takahashi also received a spotlight of her own, performing “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis” as The Weeknd remained onstage.
The unreleased Weeknd track has been referred to as “Tokyo” in coverage surrounding the concerts, although an official commercial title and release date had not been confirmed.
The surprise debut adds another wrinkle to a significant period in Tesfaye’s career. His 2025 album Hurry Up Tomorrow was presented as the final album in the musical trilogy that began with After Hours and continued with Dawn FM, as well as a potential closing chapter for his long-running Weeknd persona.
For now, the new song remains a live preview rather than a formally announced single. Its debut, however, turned a tour opener in Japan into an unusual meeting point between global pop, anime and video game culture.
