The Weeknd Breaks into Film with “Hurry Up Tomorrow”: A Psychedelic Love Story Set to Sound

The Weeknd is taking his creative universe to the big screen. His highly anticipated film debut, Hurry Up Tomorrow, arrives in theaters May 16, with early screenings set for May 14 in select cities. The project marks a bold leap for the global pop icon, who stars in and helped shape the film from the ground up.

In a new interview with Fandango, Abel Tesfaye (aka The Weeknd) revealed that the film came before its companion album. “We were scoring and writing music to picture,” he explained. “It all started with a real-life incident I imagined cinematically.” The result? A gripping, genre-bending film that explores obsession, love, and fame through a surreal, psychological lens.

Directed by Trey Shults (Waves), Hurry Up Tomorrow co-stars Jenna Ortega as Annie, Abel’s love interest, and Barry Keoghan in a mystery role. Shults and Tesfaye connected over their shared love for cinema, trading influences ranging from Persona to Purple Rain.

To further hype the release, The Weeknd dropped a cinematic visual for “I Can’t Wait to Get There,” blending music and footage from the film.

The Weeknd’s After Hours Til Dawn tour kicks off May 9, just days before fans experience his darkest artistic vision yet.
