As you likely know by now, Tight End Travis Kelce will be vying for his fourth Super Bowl win with the Kansas City Chiefs on February 9. You might also know that his brother Jason retired last year after 13 years as the Philadelphia Eagles Center.
While the Kelce households might be torn as to which team to root for when the Chiefs and Eagles meet again in Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans, the brothers can agree on the best ice cream flavors – and where to find them. On the latest episode of the New Heights With Jason and Travis Kelce podcast, the duo were discussing their all-time favorite ice cream flavors when they revealed a tip that made ice cream lovers everywhere perk up their ears.
As Food & Wine reports, the duo were discussing their “Mount Rushmore” of ice cream, and while contemplating pint preferences, Travis pointed out that “some flavors taste better from different places.” When it comes to cake batter, which both brothers name among the best ice cream flavors out there, they say you have to get it from Cold Stone Creamery. Jason noted that one of his favorite frozen treats is “Cake batter, but do cake batter specifically from…” and Travis chimed in right away with “Cold Stone.”
Jason shared he loved going to “Cold Stone Creamery and getting the cake batter ice cream with some brownie in there…then I’d have them drizzle the caramel and chocolate on there.”
But what makes this ice cream shop’s rendition of the classic flavor so special? It’s hard to tell, considering that Cold Stone won’t publicly release the recipe, but it might be thanks to the brand’s commitment to fresh ice cream, and always made in-store (which is why you can’t find it in the freezer aisle at your local grocery store). For this reason, some fans say you should always go to the ice cream shop on a Monday, when they’ve just made a fresh batch of all the frozen desserts. Flavors tend to be more potent when they’re fresher, and for something subtle like cake batter, that freshness makes a big difference.
Cold Stone’s ice cream also has a relatively high butterfat percentage, and labeled as a “super-premium ice cream.” This means it has a butterfat content of at least 12%–14%, which isn’t uncommon for a quality ice cream, but it is higher than the minimum required butterfat percentage of 10% in the United States. So, if you notice that Cold Stone tastes richer than your off-brand grocery store pint, this is likely why. A higher butterfat content matters for a flavor that’s largely reliant on simple sweetness and a buttery, almost custardy taste like, well, cake batter.
If cake batter ice cream isn’t quite your thing, the Kelce brothers also mentioned several other options that would be on what they call their “Mount Rushmore of ice cream flavors,” including Butter Pecan, Cookies and Cream, and Black Raspberry Chip (specifically from Graeter’s) all making the cut alongside cake batter.
