While the Golden Globes returned to The Beverly Hilton with a newly grey—instead of red—carpet and amidst heavy rains that have caused flooding throughout Southern California, the stars looked anything but gloomy.
After nearly three years of isolation and grief, the actors celebrated the return of an in-person award show with bright colors, dreamy pastels and no shortage of sparkles.
Purple, in a variety of shades, was possibly “the” trending color on the Golden Globes red carpet. Sheryl Lee Ralph opted for a floor-hitting embellished gown by Aliétte (and rocked matching colored eye shadow for the finishing touch) in a vibrant jewel tone. Niecy Nash appeared in a rhinestone-studded Dolce & Gabbana ensemble, complete with a billowing cape, in a rich eggplant. Similarly, Selena Gomez’s velvet Valentino number was washed in a deep, almost black ultraviolet, with lighter balloon sleeves.
Though most gravitated towards deeper shades of purple, Kaley Cuoco hugged her baby bump in a tulle lilac dress by Vera Wang, ad Robyn DelMonte similarly draped herself in a lilac full length gown. Not to be outdone, erstwhile fashionista Heidi Klum wore a cutout mini glittery silver number draped with an ombre of purple/lilac faux feathers. And Gabriel LaBelle stood up for the men in a pale lilac suit with matching bow tie.
Perhaps the stars got the memo that their fashion choices wouldn’t be in competition with the Globes’ grey carpet, because on the other end of the royal spectrum, bright bold red burst onto the scene.
Billy Porter made a statement (doesn’t he always?) in a Christian Siriano red tuxedo gown, whose luscious velvet train flowed behind him. Lily James’ red taffeta Versace was minimal up top (strapless with waist cutouts) and maximalist at the bottom, billowing out on all sides.
The Latin Ladies all went Red for effect, including Cassie DiLaura, Naz Perez, Monica Barbaro, and Lucia Aniello.
On the Pastel Spectrum, Seth Rogen showed he wasn’t afraid to wear pink, at least when it’s in the form of a pink Dior suit. Also pretty in pink: Julia Garner, Mollie Sims, and Margot Robbie in Chanel. Anna Taylor-Joy’s pale yellow Dior and Jenna Ortega’s nude Gucci were both cut and draped to perfection. But the “style icon” of the week award may have gone to Michelle Williams, who made a splash with her creamy ruffled and pleated Gucci confection, with the scallops theme continuing down onto her open-toed shoes (another trend for the evening).
A few contrasting standouts: Britt Lower wearing a strapless Bach Mai creation that was all serious black through the bodice (and matching full length gloves) and nothing but fun on the bottom with a bright pomegranate pink taffeta skirt. Hannah Einbinder’s Carolina Herrera dress reversed that idea, with the black strapless, full-skirted dress contrasted by a creamy white bandeaux. Not to be outdone, Letitia Wright simply burned in her burnt orange and cream Prada with matching strappy orange heels.
But if you’re a fan of all that glitters, the stars simply shined at the Globes this year. And, if you gravitate towards silver, you were in heaven with Jessica Chastain in a sculptural cobweb silver Oscar De La Renta, Angela Bassett’s shimmering silver Pamella Roland, and Salma Hayek’s Gucci gown.
Silver not your thing? No problem! Michelle Yeoh’s glittering midnight blue strapless peplum Armani Prive creation showed off her sculpted arms, and Abby Elliott’s sparkling fire orange Pamella Roland number showed off her baby bump. Both Nicole Beyer (in a sparkling Christian Siriano ball gown) and Jennifer Coolidge’s (in a glimmering black off-the-shoulder Dolce & Gabbana) showed off their sassy style.
If this year’s red, ahem grey, carpet is any indicator, we’re looking forward at a Spring season of royal purple, regal red, pretty pastels, and lots of shimmer, and a fantastic awards season of fashion for the eyes.
