The all-girl band ‘Fanny’ has returned after disbanding decades ago, now calling themselves ‘Fanny Walked the Earth’ and their new album drops this week.
If you thought the Go Go’s or Runaways were the first all female rock band to make it big, you’re wrong. The 1st real female rock group that rocked the house was called ‘Fanny’ (after changing their name from Wild Honey) starting out in the early 70s. Fanny was comprised of sisters Jean and June Millington, Nickey Barclay, and Alice de Buhr.
Here’s how it all began… The band performed at ‘open mic’ at the LA Troubadour, and decided to call it quits after the set. In the crowd was the secretary of music producer Richard Perry who had been looking for an all-female rock group to sign. Perry was able to convince a major record label to record their first three albums. The single “Charity Ball’ hit the top 40 in 1972.
Here’s “Lured Away,” the band’s first single.
