The Day “Smoke on the Water” Arrived and Other Major Music Moments

May 26 has delivered its share of unforgettable moments across the music world, from landmark releases and television appearances to headline-making celebrity events and tragic live concert incidents.

Back in 1965, The Rolling Stones continued their rapid rise in America with an appearance on the television music program “Shindig!” Sharing the stage with Jackie DeShannon, Sonny & Cher and Jimmie Rodgers, the performance reflected the explosion of British rock acts dominating pop culture during the decade.

Just four years later, John Lennon and Yoko Ono once again turned headlines into activism by launching their second “Bed-In For Peace” in Montreal. The event blended celebrity attention with anti-war messaging and became one of the era’s defining pop culture protests. Their Montreal stay would also help inspire the recording of “Give Peace a Chance,” forever tying music and activism together.

Rock history added another major chapter in 1973 when Deep Purple released “Smoke on the Water” as a single. Built around one of the most famous guitar riffs ever recorded, the song became a staple of classic rock radio and remains a rite of passage for aspiring guitar players decades later.

Not all memories from May 26 are celebratory. In 1974, a David Cassidy concert in London ended in tragedy when overcrowding caused chaos among fans. More than 1,000 concertgoers reportedly required medical attention, and a 14-year-old girl lost her life. The heartbreaking incident became a turning point in conversations about crowd management and concert safety.

The date also marked important releases and cultural milestones in the years that followed. Jill Jones released her debut album in 1987, bringing her soulful style to a wider audience while maintaining ties to Prince’s influential Minneapolis music scene.

In 1988, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Cats” opened in Moscow with a British and American cast, symbolizing a rare entertainment collaboration during a changing political climate in the Soviet Union.

And in one of the biggest celebrity stories of the 1990s, Michael Jackson married Lisa Marie Presley in the Dominican Republic on May 26, 1994. The union generated nonstop media coverage around the globe and became one of the entertainment industry’s most closely watched relationships.

From groundbreaking rock anthems to unforgettable headlines, May 26 remains a surprisingly packed day in music history.
