The newly rechristened Actor Awards (formerly known as The Screen Actors Guild Awards), have announced that they are introducing a Met Gala style “fashion theme” for their red carpet this year. The fashion theme will reimagine “Hollywood Glamour From The ’20s and ’30s” as part of a new collaboration with Elle for the show’s red carpet.

As Paste magazine reports, some have criticized the event’s choice of decades to highlight, saying that focusing on the years that led up World War II is a little too on the nose in today’s unsettling political climate. But according to Actor Awards showrunner and executive producer Jon Brockett, it’s a move that’s aimed to attract a wider audience, i.e. ratings.

“As the Actor Awards continue to evolve for a global audience, partnering with Elle allows us to elevate fashion as a central part of the show’s creative expression,” said Actor Awards showrunner and executive producer Jon Brockett. “It’s an opportunity to align the red carpet, the show and the culture around it into a single, cohesive moment.”

For her part, Elle editor-in-chief Nina Garcia says, “Elle has a long history with Hollywood, and we have always championed both emerging talent and established stars. Our vision of fashion is forever intertwined with what we see onscreen, so I’m thrilled that Elle is joining the Actor Awards as its first-ever fashion partner. We’re excited to bring our distinct editorial point of view to an event that celebrates creativity, craft and the power of storytelling.”

As Variety reports, the news comes on the heels of the Met Gala-inspired red carpet at this year’s Golden Globes. The arrivals, like the Met Ball, had photographers and video crews on either side of the carpet as well as a brief photo-op on a flight of stairs positioned just after the photo line. Unfortunately, that gambit did not pay off, as viewership declined 8% from last year

The 32nd Actor Awards Presented by SAG-AFTRA will stream globally on Sunday, March 1, on Netflix.
