“To celebrate “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” the second volume in a two-part Costume Institute exhibition, the 2022 Met Gala will ask its attendees to embody the grandeur—and perhaps the dichotomy—of Gilded Age New York,” Vogue announced on Instagram. The event’s dress code, revealed last week, calls for “gilded glamour, white-tie.” Could it be that this year’s Gala organizers were inspired by HBO’s The Gilded Age, or perhaps Netflix’s Bridgerton?
The theme is part two of the Met’s ode to American history through a fashion lens and follows on from part one, titled “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” which opened in September 2021. Like the September 2021 edition, the 2022 theme is centered on American fashion as the event honors part two of the Met exhibition. The second installment is titled “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” whereas the first was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” which opened at the museum in September. The first exhibit is currently still on show at the Anna Wintour Costume Center and features designs from American fashion legends including Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein.
Meanwhile, part two of the exhibit is set to open on Saturday, May 7, and aims to explore the fundamental foundation of American fashion, including individual designers who worked in the U.S. between the 19th-century to the late-20th century. Both parts of the In America exhibit will close on Monday, September 5, 2022
The Met Gala 2022 is fast approaching and unlike last year—when it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic—things are back to their regularly scheduled programming. As is tradition, the biggest event on the fashion calendar will take place on the first Monday in May at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This year’s in-person event is promising to be a star-studded event, with Regina King, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds and Lin-Manuel Miranda acting as the night’s official co-chairs, while designer Tom Ford, Instagram’s Adam Mosseri, and Vogue’s Anna Wintour will continue as honorary co-chairs.
Why is fashion’s biggest night held on a Monday of all days? It wasn’t always the case. The gala has been held since 1948 but used to take place in late November or early December, reports The Independent. From 2001 through 2004, the Met Gala was in April, but from 2005 on, it has occurred on the first Monday of May, under the tutelage of Met Gala chairwoman and Vogue editrix Anna Wintour.
