To mark what would have been her friend and former Fleetwood Mac bandmate Christine McVie’s 81st birthday, Stevie Nicks turned to a special guest for a heartfelt tribute. McVie, the singer-songwriter behind some of Fleetwood Mac’s biggest hits, passed away in November 2022 following a brief illness.
On July 12, the day McVie would have celebrated her birthday, Nicks brought Harry Styles on stage during her performance at Hyde Park in London. Together, they performed a moving rendition of the Fleetwood Mac classic “Landslide” and “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around.”
In a video widely shared on social media, Nicks addressed the audience, saying, “What I want you to know is Christine was Harry’s girl, she was my girl, she was your girl.” She added, “She loved all of us; today was her birthday. It’s taken me all this time to try and be able to deal with this situation.”
Nicks reflected on the comfort she finds in performing, recalling advice from her mother: “One thing my mom used to say to me when I was little was when I was hurt, she’d go, ‘Stevie, when you’re hurt, you always run to the stage.’ That’s what I’ve been doing ever since Chris passed away – running to the stage.”
She expressed gratitude to the audience, noting, “The only people that have been able to help me to get over this have been all of you.”
This emotional tribute was not the first time Nicks and Styles have shared the stage. They previously performed “Landslide” together at the Forum in Los Angeles in 2019 and “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction ceremony that same year as part of Nicks’ induction.
Nicks’ tribute, with Styles’ support, was a touching celebration of McVie’s legacy and the enduring bond among Fleetwood Mac’s members.
