Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron has shared a long-awaited update on the band’s upcoming final album, one that includes posthumous vocals from the late Chris Cornell. The project has been in the works since before Cornell’s death in 2017, and according to Cameron, it’s now “over halfway done.”
Despite the progress, fans hoping for a surprise drop around the band’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction—slated for November 8, 2025—should hold their excitement. Soundgarden members are deliberately holding off on releasing any singles or the album itself until they feel the entire project is polished. Cameron emphasized that they want the record finished in full before putting anything out.
Guitarist Kim Thayil is currently finalizing his guitar parts, working to ensure each piece meets the band’s high bar. Though no release date has been set, the album is shaping up as both a tribute to Cornell’s legacy and a closing bookend for Soundgarden’s catalog.
For a band that defined the Seattle grunge sound and helped push rock into new territory in the ’90s, this final record feels like the deeply felt, careful farewell their fans—and Cornell himself—deserve.
