Sophie Turner is breaking her silence about the tumultuous days following her split from Joe Jonas in September 2023. In an interview with British Vogue, the actress discussed her upcoming ITV series Joan and candidly shared her emotional journey post-divorce.
“The worst few days of my life,” Turner, 27, described. While filming Joan, a drama based on Britain’s notorious jewel thief Joan Hannington, she faced a barrage of negative media reports. “I remember I was on set for another two weeks, and my kids were in the States. All these articles started coming out, calling me a bad mother who liked to party.”
Turner vehemently denied the accusations. “It hurt because I torture myself over every move I make as a mother — mum guilt is so real! I had to remind myself, ‘None of this is true. You are a good mum, and you’ve never been a partier.’”
Turner revealed she learned about the divorce through the media, the same time as everyone else. The shock of the split was compounded by false stories branding her a “wayward mother.” “People just make things up based on a picture. It felt like watching a movie of my life that I hadn’t written, produced, or starred in. I’m still in shock.”
In her darkest moments, Turner struggled to keep going. “I called my lawyer saying, ‘I can’t do this.’ But then she reminded me I was fighting for my children, and that’s all I needed to hear. I found the strength for them.”
Turner found solace in an unexpected friend: Taylor Swift. After the split, Turner and Swift, who briefly dated Jonas years ago, reconnected. Swift offered her place to Turner and her children. “Taylor was an absolute hero to me this year,” Turner said. “She provided us with a home and a safe space. I’ve never been more grateful to anyone.”
Turner and Jonas began dating in 2016 and married in 2019. They have two daughters, Willa, born in July 2020, and Delphine, born in July 2022. Despite the challenges, Turner is focused on her children and her career, drawing strength from the support around her.
