The Songwriters Hall of Fame (SHOF) hosted its annual awards ceremony on Thursday night, continuing its tradition of honoring the icons behind the music industry’s biggest hits. Held at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York’s Times Square, the event has become a unique blend of an awards show, family reunion, and trade event that consistently delivers unforgettable performances and tributes.
This year’s SHOF ceremony featured a dazzling lineup of honorees: R.E.M., Steely Dan, SZA, producer Timbaland, and songwriters Hillary Lindsey, Diane Warren, and the late Cindy Walker. The event kicked off with a heartfelt tribute to Dean Pitchford, celebrated with performances of his classics including “Footloose” by Kevin Bacon and “Let’s Hear It for the Boy” by Deniece Williams.
Steely Dan was honored with a sleek performance by Phish’s Trey Anastasio, who delivered a medley of “Kid Charlamagne” and “Reeling in the Years,” while SZA was presented with the Hal David Starlight Award by Nile Rodgers, celebrating her innovative approach to songwriting.
Carrie Underwood showcased her powerful vocals with “Jesus Take the Wheel” to honor Hillary Lindsey, who joined Keith Urban on stage for a moving duet of their hit “Blue Ain’t Your Color.”
Missy Elliott inducted her longtime collaborator Timbaland with a light-hearted speech recounting their early days making music with quirky keyboard sounds. Timbaland followed with an electrifying medley of his biggest hits, including “SexyBack” and “Get Your Freak On,” leading the audience through a high-energy tribute to his prolific career.
Jason Isbell honored R.E.M. with a rousing performance of “It’s the End of the World as We Know It” before Michael Stipe delivered a touching acceptance speech and the band played “Losing My Religion.”
Diane Warren closed the evening with an emotional speech, reflecting on her journey and the support she received from her parents and industry champions like Clive Davis. Her heartfelt words were followed by El Debarge’s show-stopping performance of “Rhythm of the Night.”
A special moment of the night was the announcement that SHOF CEO Linda Moran was unable to attend due to her battle with leukemia. The audience sent their best wishes through a video greeting, adding a poignant touch to an evening of celebration and nostalgia.
As the crowd departed, there was a shared sense of gratitude and admiration for the songwriters who have crafted the soundtrack to our lives. The Songwriters Hall of Fame once again proved that while the faces of performers may change, the power of a great song endures forever.
