Shohei Ohtani has accomplished the unimaginable, becoming the first player in MLB history to achieve 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season—and he did it with nine games still remaining. Ohtani then took it one step further by joining the 51-51 club in the same game, while also helping the Los Angeles Dodgers clinch their first playoff berth with him on the team.
Ohtani’s record-setting performance came in one of the greatest offensive games in MLB history: he went 6-for-6, hitting three home runs, stealing two bases, and collecting two doubles, four runs, and 10 RBIs. His 50th homer not only secured his place in the record books, but it also broke Shawn Green’s 2001 franchise record for most home runs in a single season.
The historic 50th home run came in the seventh inning off Marlins reliever Mike Baumann. Earlier in the game, Ohtani reached 50 stolen bases in the first inning, stealing third base after hitting a double. He added his 51st steal in the second inning and capped the game with his third homer in the ninth, marking the first-ever three-homer, two-stolen-base game in MLB history.
With 51 home runs and 51 steals, Ohtani continues to shatter records, including tying Rickey Henderson’s 1986 mark of 13 games with both a homer and a steal in the same game. Even in a season where he’s sidelined from pitching after UCL surgery, Ohtani’s unprecedented achievements make his first year with the Dodgers unforgettable.
