Serena Williams is a tennis superstar, true, but over the years she has also developed a well-earned reputation for being a fashion icon, forever revolutionizing the way we view the tennis world. Whether you love her fashion choices or hate them, Williams isn’t going to change her style just to appease critics or play to fans. She dresses to please herself, constantly pushing boundaries, setting trends, using her style to start conversations and just generally having fun with clothes.
During the 2018 U.S. Open in August, she caught everyone’s attention when she wore Virgil Abloh’s off-White pieces he designed in collaboration with her exclusively for Nike. And now at the 2019 Australian Open, Williams competed against Tatjana Maria, Williams brought it once again with a show-stopping ensemble that included a turquoise leotard with graphic stripes at the waistline and down the center, and…flesh-tone fishnet tights. Yup, fishnets on the tennis courts.
In a post-match interview with Metro, Williams spoke about having designed the leotard in collaboration with Nike. “I have been working really, really hard in the offseason to be incredibly fit and incredibly ready,” said the athlete of her choice to show off all that hard work via a body-hugging leotard. “Nike always wants to make an incredibly strong, powerful statement for moms that are trying to get back and get fit. That was basically it for me.”
