Selena Gomez Remains Uncertain About Future Touring Amid Mental Health Struggles

Selena Gomez is still undecided about whether she will tour again, nearly eight years after abruptly canceling her Revival tour due to mental health challenges. In a candid interview with TIME on Wednesday, May 29, the 31-year-old singer and actress revealed she is “50-50” on the prospect of embarking on another major tour.

“Nothing makes me happier than 90 minutes of being with my fans and just celebrating together,” Gomez shared. “However, it is very emotionally draining for me, and then you realize you’re just surrounded by a bunch of people that you’re paying.”

Gomez’s last tour in 2016 was cut short after 55 dates as she sought treatment for anxiety and depression, side effects of her battle with lupus, an autoimmune disease she was diagnosed with in 2015. Her struggles were documented in her 2023 film, My Mind and Me, which began as she was preparing for the Revival tour.

In the documentary, Gomez is seen tearfully expressing her stress during rehearsals, saying, “I have no idea what the f—k I’m doing… It sucks the life out of me and I don’t want to perform.” Her inner circle noted that the tour’s cancellation was due to a “psychotic break.”

Gomez’s best friend, Raquelle Stevens, recalled the chaotic period, stating, “She was hearing all of these voices… That triggered some sort of psychotic break.” Gomez was hospitalized intermittently for three years following the incident.

After a hiatus, Gomez returned to music in March 2021 with her Spanish-language album Revelación, which earned a Grammy nomination, and released the song “Single Soon” in August 2023, a collaboration with her now-boyfriend, Benny Blanco.

Despite her successful return, Gomez remains unsure about her musical future. “I do feel like I have one more album in me, but I would probably choose acting,” she said on the “SmartLess” podcast in January. “I am going to want to chill because I’m tired.”

Currently, Gomez is filming season 4 of Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building and is set to portray Linda Ronstadt in an upcoming biopic. She recently tied for Best Actress at Cannes alongside her Emilia Pérez costars Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofia Gascón, and Adriana Paz. Gomez also runs her cosmetics company, Rare Beauty, and has no plans to sell it.

As Gomez balances her flourishing career and personal well-being, fans remain hopeful for any future musical endeavors she may undertake.
