Sarah Paulson Reflects on Unforgettable Unsolicited Acting Advice

Sarah Paulson recently shared a memorable anecdote about receiving unsolicited advice during her appearance on the SmartLess podcast on May 13. The accomplished actress, currently starring in the Broadway play Appropriate, recounted an incident from a previous production of Talley’s Folly that left a lasting impression.

Paulson, 49, revealed that after performing in Talley’s Folly at the Roundabout Theatre, she received an unexpected and extensive critique from Trish Hawkins, an actress who had previously played her role. “I did a play called Talley’s Folly at the Roundabout, and the actress — and I’m gonna say this, and I’m not gonna ask you to cut this out, because I don’t f—ing care — this actress came to the play. Her name is Trish Hawkins. Hi, Trish! Hi, Trisha!” Paulson exclaimed.

The connection was facilitated by Paulson’s mother, who invited Hawkins to see the play, believing it would be beneficial. Hawkins, 78, offered a brief comment in person, but followed up with a detailed, six-page email of notes. “She looked at me sort of up and down and then she went, ‘Your dress is yellow. Mine was pink.’ And I thought, ‘What?'” Paulson recalled. The extensive email outlined Hawkins’ own experience and recommendations for the role, which Paulson found particularly intrusive and unnecessary.

“It was outrageous. It was really outrageous,” Paulson said. “Trish Hawkins, I have not forgotten it, and I hope to see you never.” Despite the unsolicited advice, Paulson kept the letter, humorously attributing the encounter to her mother’s well-meaning but misguided efforts.

Paulson recently earned her first Tony nomination for her role in Appropriate, a play about siblings confronting their past after their father’s death. The production, which has garnered rave reviews, transferred to the Belasco Theater in late March for an additional 13-week run and will play through June 23.

Reflecting on her journey, Paulson continues to shine on stage, turning even the most unexpected moments into learning experiences.
