Rosie O’Donnell Speaks Out on Daughter Chelsea’s Arrest Amid Drug Addiction Battle

Rosie O’Donnell has addressed the recent arrest of her eldest daughter, Chelsea Belle O’Donnell, who has struggled with addiction for over a decade. The family released a statement on October 19, acknowledging Chelsea’s long-standing battle with drug dependency. “Sadly, this is not new for our family—Chelsea has struggled with drug addiction for a decade,” the O’Donnell family told In Touch. “We are all hopeful she will find her way out of this deadly disease.”

The A League of Their Own star, 62, also took to Instagram the same day, sharing an old photo of Chelsea alongside a brief caption: “Chelsea is in the news today—this is a photo from a better time.”

Chelsea, 27, was arrested on September 10 after a shocking discovery at her home, where authorities found her 11-month-old son living in squalor. The house was reportedly filled with garbage, drug paraphernalia, and dangerous conditions, including methamphetamine pipes and used hypodermic needles. According to court documents, Chelsea now faces four felony charges, including child neglect, drug trafficking, and methamphetamine possession. She was also charged with two misdemeanors related to disorderly conduct and possession of illegally obtained prescription drugs.

The incident began when Chelsea herself called the police on September 10, prompting officers to visit her residence. Upon arrival, police noticed her pupils were dilated, and despite Chelsea’s initial claims that nothing was wrong, officers eventually discovered a meth pipe in her possession. Further investigation inside the home revealed the disturbing conditions under which her young son was living.

Authorities encountered Chelsea’s boyfriend, Jacob Nelund, who also appeared under the influence of drugs. He admitted to a verbal altercation with Chelsea but downplayed the severity of the situation. Both were detained as officers continued their search. During her arrest, Chelsea was found hiding methamphetamine and prescription pills on her person.

The police report detailed the unsanitary state of Chelsea’s home, describing piles of dirty dishes, rotting food, blood-stained clothing, and used female hygiene products scattered across the house. Even more troubling were the hypodermic needles discovered in the child’s bedroom, some of which still contained traces of blood.

Child Protective Services immediately removed Chelsea’s son from the home, placing him temporarily in the care of a friend of Nelund.

Rosie O’Donnell has been open about her strained relationship with Chelsea in the past, but it’s clear that the actress remains concerned for her daughter’s well-being. The family continues to hold out hope for Chelsea’s recovery. A court hearing for Chelsea has been scheduled for next month, and she remains in custody at this time.
