Tensions boiled over at Atlanta Falcons training camp on Sunday as rookie edge rusher James Pearce Jr. found himself in the center of two heated skirmishes. The spirited clashes—first with guard Matthew Bergeron and later with tackle Kaleb McGary—highlighted both Pearce’s intensity and the growing pains of a competitive preseason environment.
Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich acknowledged the team’s aggressive mindset but noted the importance of control. “We’re trying to build a culture of urgency and physicality,” he said. “But today, it crossed the line. That’s a lesson these guys need to learn—especially Pearce.”
Despite the scrums, Pearce’s fire didn’t go unnoticed. After the dust settled, he batted down a Kirk Cousins pass, earning praise from the veteran quarterback. His drive and passion, Ulbrich said, come from a deep love of the game and a desire to prove himself.
Veteran edge rusher Leonard Floyd stepped in during both incidents to de-escalate and support his young teammate, showing early signs of team chemistry and leadership. Offensive line coach Dwayne Ledford likened the practice to “off-roading in a nice truck”—meant to be tough, but controlled.
As emotions run high, one thing’s clear: these Falcons aren’t backing down.
