According to cnbc.com, tennis icon Roger Federer is retiring from the sport after his astonishing 24 year long career. The Swiss tennis player announced the new son Thursday in a letter posted to Twitter. Federer stated the Laver Cup next week will be his final ATP event. According tot he letter, “Tennis has treated me more generously than I ever would have dreamt, and now I must recognize when it is time to end my competitive career, I will play more tennis, of course, but just not in Grand Slams or on the tour. This is a bittersweet decision, because I will miss everything the tour has given me, But at the same time, there is so much to celebrate. I consider myself one of the most fortunate people on Earth.”
Federer holds the professional tennis record for the most consecutive weeks at Number one with 237, and the record for the oldest player to rank Number one, at 36 years old in 2018. At 41 years old Federer is a 20 time Grand Slam champion and has played over 1,500 matches in which he served 11,478 aces. Federer recorded over $130 million in career earnings and his sponsors include Wilson, Rolex, Mercedes-Benz, Uniqlo, Moet Hennessey, and Credit Suisse. He did not state what he was planning on doing once retired, but concluded the letter in saying, “Finally, to the game of tennis: I love you and will never leave you.”
