The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has unveiled its list of 14 nominees for the class of 2025, featuring a diverse array of artists spanning various genres and eras. Notable first-time nominees include Mariah Carey, Chubby Checker, OutKast, Phish, Bad Company, the Black Crowes, Joe Cocker, and Billy Idol. Returning nominees encompass Cyndi Lauper, Joy Division/New Order, Maná, Oasis, Soundgarden, and the White Stripes.
Mariah Carey stands out with 19 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, while Chubby Checker’s iconic “The Twist” remains a cultural touchstone. OutKast, comprising André 3000 and Big Boi, is celebrated for pushing the boundaries of hip-hop, and Phish has garnered a dedicated following through their improvisational live performances.
The selection process involves over 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry professionals who will vote on the nominees. Criteria for induction include an artist’s impact on other musicians, the scope and longevity of their career, and their innovation and excellence in style and technique. To be eligible, artists must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to nomination. The inductees will be announced in late April, with the induction ceremony slated for Los Angeles this fall.
