Rick Moranis Ends Hiatus to Reprise Dark Helmet in Spaceballs 2

After nearly three decades away from live-action film, Rick Moranis is officially returning to the screen—reprising his iconic role as Dark Helmet in Spaceballs 2. The sequel, now in production under Amazon MGM, marks Moranis’s first on-camera appearance since Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves (1997).

Production has already commenced, with Amazon releasing a behind-the-scenes table-read photo featuring Moranis alongside fellow returning cast members such as Bill Pullman (as Lone Starr), Daphne Zuniga (Princess Vespa), George Wyner (Colonel Sandurz), and original creator Mel Brooks.

New additions include Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, Anthony Carrigan, and Josh Gad, who is also co-writing the script. Directing duties are handled by Josh Greenbaum, from a screenplay by Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez. The film is tentatively slated for release in 2027—coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the original Spaceballs.

Moranis’s decision to return signals both a nod to fan nostalgia and a bold step back into a medium he once stepped away from to prioritize family. As Spaceballs 2 revives a beloved parody universe, his comeback adds both weight and delight to this long-awaited sequel.
