Richard Simmons’ death was accidental, brother Lenny confirms

Richard Simmons’ passing has been officially ruled accidental, according to his brother, Lenny Simmons. In a statement released on Wednesday, August 21, family spokesperson Tom Estey shared that the Los Angeles Coroner’s office informed Lenny that Richard’s death was due to complications from recent falls, with heart disease as a contributing factor. The toxicology report found no substances other than prescribed medications. “The Family wishes to thank everyone for their outpouring of love and support during this time of great loss,” Estey added.

The beloved fitness icon was discovered on July 13 by his longtime housekeeper, just a day after celebrating his 76th birthday. While the Los Angeles Police Department initially confirmed there was “no foul play,” the cause of death was deferred pending additional tests. Reports later revealed that Simmons had experienced dizziness and a fall at home on July 12, with plans to seek medical attention if his condition didn’t improve.

Richard Simmons, known for his vibrant personality and dedication to helping others, was more than just a fitness guru—he was a cultural icon. His final interview, given two days before his passing, reflected his enduring positivity. “I feel good! I am grateful that I’m here, that I am alive for another day,” he told People magazine, sharing his plans to celebrate his birthday with humor, noting he’d likely blow out a candle on a zucchini due to his vegetarian lifestyle.

Simmons also spoke of his shy, introverted nature, contrasting with the energetic persona he displayed when “the curtain goes up.” Despite his fame, he humbly remarked, “I never thought of myself as a celebrity.” His brother Lenny hopes people remember Richard for the joy and genuine care he brought to countless lives. “I don’t want people to be sad about my brother. I want them to remember him for the genuine joy and love he brought to people’s lives,” Lenny said, encouraging everyone to celebrate Richard’s life and legacy.
